weaving

children are mesmerized by weaving…the rhythm of it is like a mediation…and it helps their little hands and fingers expand their range…

simple looms can be made with cardboard found in your recycling bin…old cereal boxes or cardboard are great…also, looms can even be made across a table…or between two trees outdoors…

how to:

- take your scrap cardboard and trim it into a rectangle or square shape
- cut small notches in both ends, fairly evenly spaced- this will be what catches your warp
- wind your warp: take string- any kind will work- and wrap your loom, end to end, with one continuous piece…you will be
creating ‘stripes’ that will hold your weaving
- tie off the ends to secure, then begin weaving: take any string, yard, twig, piece of trash and weave it over-under-over
under until you reach the end of the row, then return the other direction, reversing your over-under-over pattern
- when you run out of material, gather more and continue until you fill your loom, or until you feel done
- secure ends, then you may cut away your weaving from the loom, if desired- note, if you do, you will need to secure the
ends at the top and bottom of the weaving, so that it stays secure.
